In the latest in legal software purchases, Vista Equity Partners has bought Mitratech. As noted in the post, Vista also owns Aderant, which in turn recently acquired Client Profiles, CompuLaw and Rainmaker. I think it’s a shame that Eric Thurston is quoted as saying “We’ll keep Aderant completely separate because they’re in a different space.” Here is an excellent opportunity to build connectivity tools between law firms running Aderant and law departments running Mitratech. To my knowledge no one else is in a position to make financial and case data flow between inside and outside counsel like Vista could with this newest purchase. I agree that it would be good if Aderant/Mitratech were looking to integrate relevant functionality. I was part of a similar merger about 20 years ago when my company, CompInfo, was acquired by CMS Data, which later became PC DOCS, now part of Open Text.
It was a stated purpose, and should have been a ‘no-brainer’, to integrate and coordinate matter management, time recording, etc. The reality was that this did not become a priority. Each company had its own short-term priorities and there was no strong overall management looking at long-term direction. Since the Aderant/Mitratech combination is not a merger, it may be even more challenging, although good integration would benefit both organizations. I wish them the best.
